Kathrin Röggla, Austrian author and Vice President of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, visited Dublin on the 23rd of January to hold a reading and a subsequent discussion in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. Around 40 people – students, lecturers and guests – attended the event, which was organised and hosted by the Department of Germanic Studies.
Röggla read different passages from her novel Wir Schlafen nicht (The English translation We Never Sleep was published by Ariadne Press). According to one reviewer: “The novel is both a darkly comedic and deeply disturbing view of the work world in the digital age. […] Kathrin Röggla ventures into the dysfunctional, self-contained and self-destructive universe of a New Economy trade convention.” Before answering questions from the audience, Röggla also presented a monologue from Junk Space. The following Q&A-session continued over wine and snacks (generously provided by the Austrian Embassy Dublin and the Irish-Austrian-Society) at the Players Theatre on campus.
Junk Space is going to be performed by the departments’ student drama group on the 19th and the 20th of February in THE LIR ACADEMY (for more information and ticket reservation please contact OeAD-lecturer Katja Riegler: firstname.lastname@example.org).
